MAGYAR TEJFÖL / HUNGARIAN SOUR CREAM

Hecker Péter kiállítása

„A nemzeti élet minden megnyilvánulása a legádázabb nemzeti célszersűség alá rendeződött, s mind reális, mind képzelt teljesítményeik – a Nobel-díjtól kezdve az olimpiai rekordokig – elvesztették spontán, öncélú jellegüket, és belekerültek a nemzeti öndokumentáció szolgálatába.” BIBÓ ISTVÁN: A kelet-európai kisállamok nyomorúsága (1946)

A legendás hat-három, a magyar tejföl, a szent korona, a magyar népmesék, a nemzeti divat, a magyar történelmi hősök és a jellegzetes magyar nemzeti tájban megjelenő ellenséges haderő mind ennek a provincializmusnak a kifejeződése. A monokróm sorozatot kiegészítve és a közélet helyzetére reagálva, síró közalkalmazottakat is festettem.

Hecker Péter

„Every manifestation of national life has been arranged underneath the principle of the most ardent national functionalism, and both our real and our imaginary achievements – from the Nobel Prize to Olympic records – have lost their spontaneous, self-serving quality, and have become subservient to national self-documentation.”
ISTVÁN BIBÓ: The Misery of Small Eastern European States (1946)

The new brand of Hungarian nationalism – compared to the 19th century national ideology of the age of Kölcsey, Vörösmarty or Petőfi – is ridiculously dumb, its pettiness is almost amusing, and it stems from a certain kind of provincialism. This sort of nationalist assertiveness is manifest mostly in its immovability. Provincialism is out of date, and is characterised by a completely narrow-minded way of thinking. The sense of inferiority and narrow-mindedness that characterises Eastern European states is related to a psychopathological state of mind (depression), due to which the perception of the given space (country, region) is significantly distorted. The loss of proportions, which leads to the apparent limitation of space is primarily a characteristic of insular and narrow-minded cultures. In the past months I examined this phenomenon (national provincialism in the periphery) and its symbols and made them the subjects of my paintings. These large works depict schematically and in shades of black and white the examples I’ve selected from among the phenomena based on my subjective decisions. The legendary six-three football game, Hungarian sour cream, the sacred crown, Hungarian folk tales, national fashion, Hungarian national heroes and enemy forces appearing in the characteristically Hungarian national landscape are all the expression of this provincialism. To complement the monochrome series and to reflect on the current state of public affairs, I’ve also painted crying public servants.
