A tudományos előadásokkal, interjúkkal előkészített nemzetközi kiírás több irányban nyitott lehetőségeket a pályázók előtt: tervezhettek különböző budapesti helyszínekre, gondolkodhattak maradandó vagy efemer alkotásokban.

The initiative launched by the Municipality of Budapest aims to create a space for dialogue on wartime rape by commemorating the victims. To be erected in spring 2023, the ‘construction’ of the memorial takes place before the public with the involvement of a wide range of professional and civilian actors. The website www.elhallgatva.hu keeps track of the process, providing a wealth of resources, interviews and art historical lectures on the subject.

This exhibition presents six of the 36 entries submitted to the competition for the design of a public memorial launched in the summer of 2021, from which a jury of experts selected the winning proposal, to be realised the following year, as well as the winners of the second and third place.

The cornerstone of the Memory of Rape in Wartimes project was a call for proposals for the erection of a memorial. It is a complex task to design a memorial at a particular site in which the global historical experience is represented as much as the individual tragedies, and which not only refers to a concluded past, but can also shape the present and the attitude of the future.

Set up by academic lectures and interviews, the international competition opened up opportunities for applicants in several directions: proposals could be designed for a number of different locations in Budapest, with concepts that could be either permanent or ephemeral. For the applicants, this could be both an uncharted territory without any guideposts to rely on and a free space for expression. Should the artwork be abstract or use symbols that can be understood by the general public? What visual references can be used? Should it employ captions that can guide vision and thought, or focus on visual cues that leave room for feelings? All the questions were about addressing the spectator, whether the memorial could bring the spectator, the passer-by closer to the work and thus sensitise the spectator to a subject that is buried deep down inside us.

The international jury selected six works from the 36 submitted proposals, and then nominated three to be awarded. The winning and specially mentioned proposals all shared a sense of absence related to both past and present, as well as a focus on the future. The most important question for the future was how the historical gaps, the blind spots of memory, would be filled by the individual constructions of those who view the works. Only the spectator and time will tell.
